Head to the Metaverse for Ford! The American automobile giant wants to launch into the metaverse. So what are the automaker's intentions?
A first step towards the metaverse
For the time being, Ford has not yet communicated precisely on its desire to join the Metaverse. Indeed, it was a lawyer specializing in trademarks who spotted Ford's first moves in the field. Mike Kondoudis, indicated that Ford had registered 19 brands for different car models and strong ranges such as Mustang or Maverick.
By observing this list more closely, it is therefore very likely that the manufacturer wants to import its cult models like the Mustang into the metaverse. There is also mention of the establishment of shops in the metaverse . A first step for the American manufacturer before its arrival in the metaverse.
This list was filed on September 2. It is currently awaiting approval. In the documents filed by Ford, we observe that the brand wants to create works of art, text, audio as well as downloadable videos representing its models. All of this will be logically authenticated via NFT . Ford also wants to create different accessories that can be downloaded and used in the metaverse.
The brand also evokes online virtual worlds including trade fairs that could be organized via virtual reality and augmented reality.
Another major point of this filing, the creation of a marketplace made in Ford . The latter aims in particular to promote digital works of art by creators.
Ford's decision comes less than a month after massive layoff announcements. The CEO, Jim Farley had indeed announced layoffs to reduce the company's expenses around the world. A particular timing therefore for the American automobile giant which risks making people cringe.
Car manufacturers are investing in the blockchain!
Ford is not the first manufacturer to invest in the blockchain industry. Recently, Mercedes-Benz announced its partnership with Polygon . The latter aims to develop a marketplace dedicated to the commercialization of data . The idea is that companies come to provide data that other companies can buy in the form of NFTs.
Mercedes, like other manufacturers, has also embarked on the adventure of digital art collections via NFT . The manufacturer had commissioned works from 5 artists, drawing inspiration from its range of G-class vehicles.
Lamborghini also released a collection of NFTs as did MG Motors . For now, this is one of the most common use cases for car manufacturers and major brands in general.
Other manufacturers like Mercedes, but also Toyota , are going further in the blockchain adventure. One of the world leaders in the automotive sector created the Toyota Blockchain Lab in 2020.
Toyota said at the time:
At a time when all things and services will be connected through information, blockchain should be a foundational technology that will allow people and businesses to be connected more "openly" in a way that ensures security and privacy, safety.
For Toyota, the blockchain is therefore a technology of the future that allows data to be shared in complete security and improves the reliability of information.
Volkswagen, Renault and Volvo are also taking a close interest in blockchain. Volkswagen uses the blockchain in particular to improve and increase the transparency and efficiency of its cobalt supply chain. Volvo also uses the blockchain for a similar application and to guarantee the cleanest possible electric battery production.
Renault has implemented a blockchain solution called XCEED in Spain and Turkey. The latter makes it possible to improve the traceability of vehicle parts throughout the supply chain.
The examples are numerous and the automotive industry seems to be turning more and more to the blockchain. For the metaverse, the examples are fewer, but there is no doubt that Ford's movement should inspire competition .
