What are the top 10 Most Expensive CryptoPunks! This is THE collection that has highlighted the world of NFTs. And this collection continues to shine. If other projects like Bored Ape Yacht Club have been able to overshadow, CryptoPunks retains a very great power of attraction.
According to data from the Opensea platform, this is the most traded collection in history. For a transaction volume close to one million ETH. If any piece of this collection can be considered “rare”, we will see that some copies are selling for dizzying prices. Zoom on the top 10 most expensive CryptoPunks in history!
The CryptoPunks Project
Before detailing the 10 most expensive coins in the collection, let's take a look at the history of the NFT CryptoPunks collection together. Launched in 2017, CryptoPunks is a 10,000 coin NFT collection.
Set up by Larva Labs, the collection was acquired by Yuga Labs a few months ago. Yuga Labs is also known for creating the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT Collection. He now acts as a heavyweight in the NFT universe.
To ensure that each piece is unique, the collection is divided into 5 different types of attributes : alien (0.09%), monkey (0.24%), woman (38%), man (60%), zombie (0 .88%). There are also accessories for each of these NFTs. The most common for a CryptoPunk? 3 accessories.
Among the most common accessories are earrings (25% of NFTs) and cigarettes (10% of NFTs). Some can obviously combine these two characteristics. The rarity of pieces is closely related to the rarity of traits or types of attributes in the collection.
Thus, an “alien” CryptoPunks may well sell for a lot more than a “man” CryptoPunks.
Today, the collection is one of the most bankable on the market. The floor price (price of the cheapest NFT in the collection) is currently 71.95 ETH, or over $130,000 at the time of this writing.
Good to know: When this collection was launched, the NFTs were distributed free of charge. All the more incredible when you see the price they are selling for today.
1 - CryptoPunk #5822: $23.58 million
This NFT was bought last February by Deepak Thapliyal, known to be the CEO of the Chain company. Transaction amount? 8,000 ETH, or over $23 million during the Ethereum era. Today, that 8,000 ETH is only $15 million.
As you can imagine, this is one of the rarest NFTs since it is of the “Alien” type (9 NFTs out of the 10,000 in the collection).
On top of that, the CryptoPunk #5822 features a single accessory, a feature shared by 3% of the collection. This accessory is a bandana, as you can see in the picture. Simple and efficient.
2 - CryptoPunk #4156: $10.35 million
Common point with the first of this ranking, this CryptoPunk also wears a bandana. As with #5822, this is also the only accessory of this CryptoPunk.
In December 2021, CryptoPunk #4156 sells on the markets for 2,500 ETH. Or a little over 10 million dollars at the time of the sale. Unlike the first in the ranking, it is a CryptoPunk to be placed among the monkeys (24 NFTs out of 10,000). 5 years ago, this NFT was minted for the ridiculous sum of 0.0000000000000000005 ETH.
In other words, with a single penny, you could have bought this coin several hundred million times. The following year, the NFT was already worth more than 3 ETH. It sold again in 2021 for 650 ETH before the last sale at 2,500 ETH.
3 - CryptoPunk #5577: $7.82 million
Last February CryptoPunk #5577 sold for 2,501 ETH. Like the second in this ranking, it is an NFT that represents a monkey. The icing on the cake, this NFT has one and only accessory: a cowboy hat.
An attribute only present in 1% of CryptoPunks. If this accessory is not the rarest, it seems to be widely acclaimed by CryptoPunks buyers.
4 - CryptoPunk #7804: $7.56 million
With CryptoPunk #7804, back among the “Alien” type. This NFT has 3 different accessories, namely a cap, a pipe and a small pair of sunglasses.
If having 3 accessories is not very rare (41% of the collection), it is the combination that is unique and that pleased its last buyer who did not hesitate to pay the sum of 4 200ETH.
5 - CryptoPunk #3100: $7.51 million
Among the top 5 in this ranking, CryptoPunk #3100 is therefore the third Alien NFT on our list. This punk has one and only accessory: his headband. An attribute only shared by 4% of the collection. This NFT was sold last year for the tidy sum of 4,200 ETH.
6 - CryptoPunk #8857: $6.64 million
This NFT is the first in our ranking that does not belong to the category of aliens or monkeys. No, CryptoPunk #8857 is in the zombie category, like 87 other coins in this collection.
Like 33% of the collection, he has 2 accessories: 3D glasses and a “wild” haircut. If it was bought 2.5 ETH 4 years ago now, the last sale of this NFT saw the price soar much higher: 2,000 ETH on September 11, 2021.
7 - CryptoPunk #5217: $5.44 million
Back among the monkeys with CryptoPunk #5217. An NFT that sold last July for 2,250 ETH. Among the accessories of this NFT, we find an orange knitted cap as well as a gold chain.
While the first accessory is available from 4% of the NFTs in the collection, the gold chain is rarer since it only equips 2% of the works.
8 - CryptoPunk #7252: $5.33 million
This eighth CryptoPunk on our list was last sold for 1600 ETH in August 2021. Bought on August 4 for 1000 ETH, the buyer resold it three weeks later for 1600 ETH. In addition, in the meantime, Ethereum had gone from 2,700 to 3,200 dollars per unit.
A great added value for the buyer who kept it for only 3 weeks. This is the second CryptoPunk Zombie on our list with a crazy haircut, gold earring, and chinstrap. This CryptoPunk definitely adopts one of the craziest looks in the entire collection.
9 - CryptoPunk #6275: $5.11 million
Among the notable facts about this NFT, it was owned by famous NFT collector and creator Pranksy , for only a few hours. Bought 1,000 ETH, the collector sold the coin on the same day (September 4, 2021) for the sum of 1,319 ETH.
Belonging to the zombie category, this NFT has two attributes: a shadow beard and a “Dark Mohawk”. Two accessories held by 5 and 4% of the collection respectively.
10 - CryptoPunk #2338: $4.35 million
This last NFT in our ranking has some similarities to the one presented just above. Also belonging to the category of zombies, this CryptoPunk also has the Mohawk Thin accessory. However, unlike the previous one, he does not have a beard.
Enough to make a difference in terms of price? Anyway, this coin from the CryptoPunks collection sold on August 6, 2021 for the sum of 1,500 ETH. Until this sale, none had passed the 3.5 ETH threshold.
What about CryptoPunk #9998?
On the Opensea platform, we can see that the CryptoPunk #9998 would have been sold for the sum of 124,457 ETH (234 million dollars at the current price of ETH and 530 million at the time of the sale).
But this is not an actual sale. Indeed, to get some publicity, the holder of this NFT sold it to himself through two digital wallets. Clever, but this sale cannot constitute the most expensive in the history of the collection.
