Epic Games Won't Follow Minecraft's NFT Ban

According to a post on NFTworlds, Epic Games won't follow Minecraft's NFT Ban. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the company won't ban NFTs because developers "need to be free to decide how to build their games." News that should reassure the crypto industry from one of the world's video game giants.

A long-awaited and now clear position

Tim Sweeney, founder, and CEO of Epic Games says his company will "definitely not" follow Minecraft developers in banning non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios banned NFT embeds on Wednesday, as they believe the speculative nature of NFTs, as well as the scarcity and risks of exclusion and scams believed to be associated with NFTs, are against the principles of the game.

This decision was considered very controversial in the NFT community, while it was met with enthusiasm by the cohort of crypto-skeptical gamers. Once again, NFTs are subject to debate like any innovation in its time.

Mr. Sweeney's company is behind the globally successful game Fortnite, which is perhaps also considered by some to be a Metaverse platform. While Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFT, the CEO said the company isn't trying to impose any opinion on the subject on its users:

"Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, and you are free to decide whether to play them or not. I think the stores and OS makers shouldn't interfere by imposing their views on others. We certainly won't."

In response to this post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on banning "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this one. In response, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgments, but that NFTs aren't currently one of them.

"A store can choose to be non-judgmental and host anything legal, or choose to stick to standards acceptable to the general public, like we do, or only accept games that conform to the personal beliefs of the store. owner,” he said.

NFT Worlds game needs to find a solution

Mojang Studios' ban on NFT left one particular project, dubbed NFT Worlds, with a major problem to solve, given that it was built on one of Minecraft's open-source servers.

The “play-to-earn” (P2E) community platform is surrounded by an entire ecosystem of crypto and NFTs, whose NFTs generate 51,000 Ether (ETH), representing a trading volume of $80.8 million at the moment. time of writing this article.

Since the news broke, however, the floor price of its NFTs has fallen from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH at the time of writing, while its native token WRLD has plunged 55% in this. time lapse.

After Mojang's announcement, the NFT Worlds team said they were "thinking about solutions" moving forward. The team mentioned that they are working to get in touch with Minecraft to see if a solution can be found.

Alternatively, a transition to a "Minecraft-like game engine" or a GameFi platform was described as possible options.

The NFT debate has not finished agitating the gaming community and beyond. Indeed, NFTs and gaming seem to be natural allies, so many projects linking the two worlds should continue to see the light of day in the coming months.
